Education for Human Rights in the Third Millennium: Conference on Education for Human Rights in the Third Millennium: Problems and
Challenges for UNESCO Chairs in Southern Africa. East London, South Africa, 26–27 June 2000
The conference was convened to discuss the challenges and problems that
UNESCO Chairs in Education for Human Rights face in their work, and to
devise strategies to overcome them. The Conference was organized and
structured around discussion and exchange of experiences rather than
presentation of papers.
The Conference was organized by the Oliver Tambo Chair of Human
Rights
at the University of Fort Hare (South Africa), Professor Nasila Rembe, in collaboration with UNESCO
(Unit for the
Promotion of Human Rights and Action to Combat Discrimination,
Department for Peace, Human Rights, Democracy and Tolerance). Among other participants were:
The conference was preceded by the launch of the Forum for Human Rights
Education for Tertiary Institutions in the Eastern Cape Province (South
Africa), initiated by the South African Human Rights Commission
and the Oliver Tambo Chair.
The conference focused its attention on the following questions:
- Challenges and practical problems concerning the activities of the
UNESCO Chairs and their cooperation with other human rights
institutions/NGOs.

Identification of needs and priorities on education for human rights,
democracy, peace and tolerance in Southern Africa.

Strategies for mobilizing funding and resources to strengthen the
activities of the UNESCO Chairs in Southern Africa.

Networking among the UNESCO Chairs and with national human rights
institutions, NGOs and academic institutions.

Contribution of UNESCO Chairs to international human rights programmes
and United Nations Decade for Human Rights Education.

Contribution of UNESCO Chairs to national and regional efforts to
combat HIV/AIDS and eradicate poverty.

Regional Plan of Action for UNESCO Chairs in Southern Africa.

Adoption of resolutions and recommendations.
