COMEDAF I - Conference of African Ministers of Education organized by the OAU, Harare, 15-19 March 1999

Meetings of Ad Hoc Committee of African Ministers of Education

N'Djamena, Chad, 11-13 April 1999

The second meeting of the Ad Hoc Committee of African Education Ministers (also Chaired by Professor Bengu (at the time Minister of Education of South Africa and President of the Intergovernmental Committee of MINEDAF VII) continued discussions on the issues covered by the Committee in Harare. Besides South Africa, the Ministers of Education of Chad, Madagascar, Mali and Senegal attended. [The Ministers of Education of Kenya and Zimbabwe were unable to attend.]

The Ministers considered draft documents prepared by the three Executive Secretaries (ADEA, COMEDAF and MINEDAF) on mechanisms and organs of steering and monitoring the OAU Decade of Education Programme and on possible funding strategies for regional and national activities.

The Ad Hoc Committee recommended that the draft documents be referred to the Bureau of Ministers of COMEDAF for action (at a meeting to be held in Bamako, Mali on 31 May - 1 June 1999). The Committee also recommended that the three Executive Secretaries attend that meeting to assure technical support for the Ministers.
