UNESCO Follow up to MINEDAF VII
Programme of Work, 1998-99
The Durban Statement of Commitment
provides the overall framework for the MINEDAF VII programme of work.
African Ministers of Education committed themselves:
"to realize this commitment in unison,
collaborating fully with one another to develop common strategies and to
provide mutual support, to link these regional efforts to national aspirations
and action..."
"to increase
co-operation through regional and sub-regional initiatives, and to establish
or strengthen pan-African mechanisms, adequately funded, to provide support,
to accelerate institutional capacity building, to develop collaborative
strategies and to monitor progress..."
Programme actions approved by the Intergovernmental
Committee (at its Meeting in Pretoria in September
1998) and endorsed
by the Caucus of African Ministers of Education
(convened in Paris on 9 October 1998, on the occasion of the World
Conference on Higher Education, 5-9 October 1998) are focused on a number
of areas:
- promoting exchanges of practical policy experiences;
- sharing expertise and existing educational infrastructures, especially in
higher education, through the establishment of Fellowship Banks;
- joint production and exchange of educational materials, including science
kits and equipment;
- funding for joint initiatives;
- establishment of databanks of African experts and expertise; and
- identification of African programmes and centres of excellence
The Director-General of UNESCO approved funding in the amount of US $380,000
as "seed money" during 1998-99 to initiate action in some of the
above areas.
Follow-up to MINEDAF VII is one of the priorities identified for
support in UNESCO's Approved Programme and
Budget for 2000-2001 (Document 30 C/5).
